1. Ella Fitzgerald (Jazz)

Quote: "It isn't where you came from, it's where you'regoing that counts."

Ella Fitzgerald, known as the"First Lady of Song" and "Queen of Jazz," was born in 1917 in Newport News, Virginia. Her career spanned nearly six decades, during which she won 13 Grammy Awards and sold over 40 million albums. Fitzgerald was known for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, and "scat" singing ability. She rose to fame despite a challenging childhood, including a period of homelessness. In 1934, she won an amateur contest at the Apollo Theater, which launched her singing career. Fitzgerald broke racial barriers, becoming the first African American woman to win a Grammy in 1958. She collaborated with many jazz greats, including Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. Despite her fame, Fitzgerald remained humble, often suffering from stage fright before performances. Her ability to sing in multiple languages made her an international star, and she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992. Ella Fitzgerald's resilience, talent, and dedication to her craft continue to inspire musicians and music lovers worldwide.

2. Ray Charles

Quote: "I was born with music inside me. Music was oneof my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me – like food or water."

Ray Charles, often called "TheGenius," was born in 1930 in Albany, Georgia. He lost his sight completely by the age of seven due to glaucoma, but this didn't stop him from becoming one
of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Charles pioneered the genre of soul music in the 1950s by combining rhythm and blues, gospel, and jazz. He learned to read, write, and arrange music in Braille, which allowed him to compose his own songs. Charles was one of the first African American
musicians to be given artistic control by a mainstream record company. He won 17 Grammy Awards and was honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1987. Despite his success, Charles struggled with heroin addiction for nearly 20 years before successfully overcoming it in 1965. He was known for his distinctive raspy voice and his ability to convey deep emotion through his music. Ray Charles' influence extended beyond music; he was a prominent supporter of the Civil Rights Movement and refused to play to segregated audiences. His life story was portrayed in the 2004 biographical film "Ray," which won several Academy Awards.

3. B.B. King

Quote: "The beautiful thing about learning is thatnobody can take it away from you."

B.B. King, born Riley B. King in 1925on a cotton plantation in Mississippi, became known as the "King of the Blues." He got his nickname "B.B." from "Beale Street Blues Boy," a moniker he earned as a young musician in Memphis. King's guitar, which he famously named "Lucille," has an interesting story behind
it. In 1949, King ran into a burning building to save his guitar from a fire caused by two men fighting over a woman named Lucille. From then on, he named all his guitars Lucille as a reminder never to fight over women or run into burning buildings. King developed a unique guitar style, characterized by his
bent notes and vibrato, which influenced countless blues and rock guitarists. Despite only having a fifth-grade education, King was awarded honorary doctorates from several universities. He performed an average of 300 shows a year well into his 70s. B.B. King was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame in 1987 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006. His dedication to his craft, resilience in the face of adversity, and lifelong commitment to learning make him an inspiring figure for language learners and music enthusiasts alike.
