Nvidia Corp has recently collaborated with the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom to develop a new supercomputer, putting it in direct competition with Intel Corp and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Nvidia, known as the leading producer of graphics processing units (GPUs) in the world, is now venturing into the central processing unit (CPU) market. This year, Nvidia introduced its own CPU chip called Grace, based on Arm Ltd technology owned by SoftBank Group Corp.

This move allows Nvidia to directly challenge Intel and AMD's hold on the CPU market.

At a recent supercomputing conference in Germany, Nvidia announced its collaboration with British researchers and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (HPE) to build Isambard 3, a computer solely powered by Nvidia's Grace CPU chips without utilizing any of the company's renowned GPUs. The University of Bristol intends to use the Isambard 3 system for important research in fields such as climate science and drug discovery. Ian Buck, Nvidia's general manager and vice president of accelerated computing, emphasized the system's remarkable performance and energy efficiency. Isambard 3 operates on only 270 kilowatts of power, which is six times more efficient than the university's previous system, Isambard 2.
