Welcome to 15mins.today the home of English Shadowing. I am your host Gavin, and this is InTense Episode 60.
Well guys, we are busy with verbs. We are busy with action verbs and in the last episode we did transitive verbs, and those are verbs that have an object, a direct object. “The dog ate the bone.” But a lot of times we don't have an object. We have a subject, the dog, “The dog ate.” There is no object, so that is an intransitive verb. “The dog ate.” It's a complete sentence. What did the dog eat? We don't know. We don't care. We just say that the dog ate. “Yes, the dog ate.” We don't ask why there's no object. So, we have a dog which is a noun and the subject and it ate, and that is an intransitive verb, easy as that.
Again, I will reiterate this every episode, please don't worry about this, as long as you know that this is a verb, we are fine. But for those of you are interested, if you ever hear transitive and intransitive, now you know a transitive verb has an object. “The dog ate the ball.” And an intransitive sentence, “The dog ate.” And we use them for things like, “Who called?” And you answer, “Peter called.” OK, so we use them on a daily basis, again, don't worry about it. We will do some examples and if you are really interested you can Google Intransitive Verbs, and if you look you will find lists of them of the most common ones. OK, so let's get started with our examples.
